Let's make this happen. I believe it may generate a new area for music discussion, instead of all these dubstep debates spilling into the events/reviews/main forum.

What say yee oh moderators?

Dubstep is being pushed harder than any other genre right now and with good reason but its not single handedly reviving the scene your work is helping it along!!! Push away bud I am with ya I have been collecting a nasty collection of fidget/dub tracks, waiting for the right time to drop the bombs!!

dubstep is single handed reviving the underground rave culture..

Coming from one of the biggest house/trance enthusitats in CNY.. As much as I hated DNB, Dubstep even is making me appreciate that more and more by the day..

It cross pollinated those of us who hated rap but still liked Hiphop.

no sorry. First off, you're right there's too many sub genres, but I do find them helpful for quickly identifying music, I find them annoying because djs will stick to one sub genre and then move on the the next hot thing. It's ok, I've done it myself any way... to clarify:

breakstep is a subgenre in dubstep. What defines this style is having a sampled break beat instead of using a drum machine style drum pattern. For example the Amen break (sampled from Amen Brother - Winstons) would be used in place of your basic two step drum pattern, (think most dubstep tunes). Tunes are in the 140 bpm range.

drumfunk is a sub genre for d'n'b. Again instead of using drum machine break beats the producers are using a sampled break beat of a live drummer. A popular break to use in this genre is Funky Drummer or Tighten Up. What separates this from other styles in d'n'b is the lack of any sort of simple kick snare (two step) drum pattern. If you want a clear definition of what this sounds like listen to any Paradox tune - this is the only style the man produces. 170 bpm range here. This is the only difference between the two genres in my opinion, tempo.

Drumfunk was coined by paradox - as his music had become a reaction to the over simplification and "clowniness" associated w/ popular d'n'b. Around 2002-2003 Clownstep was coined (i forget who came up w/ this? Adam F maybe?) and while it was similar to the jump up styles of the late 90s it was even more over the top and lacked the hip hop element associated w/ jump up. A lot of old school producers jumped on this "non-bandwagon" called drumfunk which is thought to take d'n'b back to it's heritage of finding interesting funk drum samples and using them in a tune - usually as the focal point. If you listen to early techno, or "jungle techno" you'll hear what I would call proto-breakstep, proto jungle, and proto d'n'b, this just means that d'n'b came from techno as some of the producers in the early 90s experimented w/ using sampled break beats (ultra beat) instead of a simple 4X4 kick drum. The two genres broke away from each other and we started hearing what we now know as techno, and what we know as jungle (specifically oldschool jungle).

phew. and that really only scratches the surface.

it's not at the BMP of drum N bass, which is usually 160-180. Dubstep is @ 130-140.. half tempo of course.

There is half tempo dnb, called "drumstep" which you can mix w. dnb. its basically faster paced dubstep. Ask Swan about that shiz.

wrong. breakstep is dubstep tempo with a breakbeat in it - not a simple two step break, that's it. Drumfunk is the 170 bpm equivalent.

but... how do I feel about it's own forum? pointless, just like all the other genre forums!

(except the d'n'b) of course.

if it gets it's own forum, it should be grouped together with garage, 2-step, future garage, UK Funky, bashment, grime, etc

:)

dude it's a broken beat at 140 bpm. that's what a breakbeat is too. you're arguing about an extra snare hit at this point.

Dubstep- Drum & Bass. Yes folks it IS a subgenre.

Fidget- House.

I don't think ppl are buying that dubstep is a subgenre of dnb. It's a second cousin really, not a brother.

fidget posts go in house. simple
