Im so glad those things are harmless, i saw two the other day near my bed and started batting things whilst leaping away... guess all i needed was a cape.
Anyways, bit of research on these things, turns out its an Insectivore, meanning it eats smaller nuisance bugs LIKE SILVERFISH that would normally eat high startched clothing or wallpaper and multiply like bastards, if not for the "Scutigera coleoptrata" aka house centipede, also, they have a perception of heat, meaning the bugs they kill, they do because they are of lesser body temp and/or cold blooded, trying to mostly avoid anything, like people, that would be warmer.
So, not only are they helpful, the like to avoid us, AND ar good parents.
Scutigera coleoptrata was observed providing parental care. The female lies on her side cradling her clutch of eggs, and later the larvae. This behavior was reported to proceed for several weeks. The female applies an antifungal secretion by mouthing the eggs.
So check it out its like the neighbor you wish you had just not so creepy lookin =] |
