Hi,
This is Dante from The Outer Limits. I am posting, not to cause a flaming match, but to explain why Paul Edge was initially advertised on this thread, however now he is not playing.
We were approached on Monday by GAC as they had a problem. Their intended guest DJ, Keoki, had tripled his rate and was holding them to ransom. They explained that this was a 300 capacity event and their budget didn`t allow for that kind of money, and could we help. Paul Edge is on tour during March, April and May promoting a number of new releases he has out or are coming out, plus his first solo album and a mix cd.
I spoke with Paul and explained the situation. He has had many great times playing for Phato and as such not only wanted to play in Syracuse again, but also he has a problem with DJs holding promoters to ransom. He agreed to reduce his fee by some 65% to help GAC out. He had a booking in Missouri on the 8 April which I rescheduled.
Conditional to this booking were the following terms. As there was no room for manouvre whatsoever, flights had to be organised, hotel booked, a deposit was requested. However to help the promoter get the ball rolling, we released all logos and photos prior to the deposit being received.
Secondly, no recording could be made and sold of his set. DJs spend a lot of money to release their records, most of Paul`s set would have been as of yet unreleased music. Promoters do not have a right to infringe copyright laws and sell other artists music without paying them any money. If anyone wants a mix of Paul, they can go to his website and download a mix for free.
Thirdly, it was drawn to our attention by some friends in Syracuse and Buffalo, that the show would probably have done more than 300 people. As we had been told explicitly by the promoter that his budget was small because he would only attract 300 people, we added a capacity clause, stating that in the event that the event did more than 360 people, Paul`s fee would be increased by the percentage increase over 360 people. This is standard practice for any DJ who is told the show is a small underground show, only to turn up and find it is a massive. You don`t think this happens, believe me it does.
Last night I received an email stating the deposits and travel would be paid by 10.30 this morning. This morning I received an email stating that despite what he had written last night, he had changed his mind, he wants to sell CDS, the capacity clause was BS (which indicates to us that he wasn`t being strictly truthful about expected attendance) and that he was cancelling Paul.
I long for the days of Phato, when promoters kept their word, DJs from the UK and Europe were willing to come over regularily and support the US scene.
As I said, I do not want this to turn into a flaming match, I wish GAC every success with their event, The Outer Limits however, has always prided itself on being honest and truthful with the people who pay our wages, the dancefloor.
To prevent any BS getting out,I felt I should communicate exactly what happened with you.
Peace

| I saw keoki last year. One of the worst DJ's I have ever seen live. That guy might have been at his prime 8 or 9 years ago but now his stuff is just awful. The floor was clear during almost his entire set, and apparently he tried to act "cool" and blow a line right off the platter of one of the 1200s. He trainwrecked on almost EVERY transition in his set. |
