Posted - 04/13/2010 : 07:06:04 AM Actually the ipad is not supposed to replace a laptop at all. It's supposed to fit in between a phone and laptop.
They're actually pretty smart. Now they'll have people buying 3 products instead of 2.
I prob would never even think of buying a $2K "ipad pro" to replace my laptop.
But $500 for something that could replace a $2000 lemur but it also plays games, videos and goes on the internet sounds like a good deal to me.

Posted - 04/09/2010 : 7:15:02 PM a p2p network, i'm assuming... which would force you to own a laptop first, which is what i thought the iPad was 'sposed to replace...
I dunno, you're smart to wait for the 2nd gen. iPad to come out, just seems like they (apple) have all the ability in the world to make a kick ass unit right outta the gate but give the public snout at first, then give them the pork chop, then the tastiest cut at the end for the people who can afford it... And i'm sure that the last gen. version will have leopard or whatever mac OS has been released, which this one is totally capable of running...

The same way as my iphone does. Touch OSC works over a wireless network connection. You run Live on a laptop and use the ipad/iphone as a controller over wireless network. Ableton is not actually running on the pad/phone.
This is basically the equivalent of have a $2K lemur for $499.
I will prob wait till the 2nd generation comes out but it's only a matter of time before my setup is APC40 and an Ipad.

Posted - 04/07/2010 : 2:03:06 PM yea, and how will said iPad act as a touch midi controller with no usb ports? Will the controller act on behalf of an app that is running on the iPad at the same time? Looks like apple may have lost this battle as HP is coming out with a unit that already has more features on it and can do just what i'm talking about with a full-on OS on it instead of a dolled up version of the iPhone OS.

EDIT: This may be alleviated soon... The mini usb port that is used to charge the iPad will soon be used for transfers with the use of adapters.. (that will no doubt cost extra for the uber apple honks)
