I just recorded a mix but there is an underlying buzzing noise in the mix which can be heard more clearly during breakdowns. The buzzing occurs when I hook my laptop up to my mixer via the record out. Is there anyway to get rid of this buzzing noise in the current mix (I used Audacity), or a way I can prevent it from occurring in future mixes? Thx

What up brotha. I'm not familiar with "Audacity" but buzzing = short. Replace all wires/connections and if thats not the problem, replace Audacity and or the Mixer. Thats the best I can do. Maybe check with BMH, he's pretty knowledgeable with shit like that.

I have found that sometimes the mic on the laptop is on very low and it picks up the fan or the hum from the hard drive if you are using the internal sound card. so check that first.

What kind of mixer do you have?
What kind of laptop?
Internal or external sound card? What kind?

Vestax Mixer, Dell Laptop, Internal Sound Card: SigmaTel Audio.
In audacity, there is an option to turn down the mic volume, but I have the wire connected to the microphone jack, but when I plug it in, I select "Line In" instead of "microphone." ^That article didn't help because in conclusion, the dude didn't figure it out, thx tho.

you're going to want an external relatively high quality sound card for recording

internal cards experience quite a bit if EMI from all the other internal components and generally are not shielded

i just picked up a set of m-audio av-30 speakers, fast track pro 2x2 USB interface and a mic marketed as a "home studio in a box" for like $135 at the local guitar center. definitely worth it as the av30's go for 99, that fast track goes for 99, and i think the mic goes for around 50

i'm trying to tell ya man, no onboard card is EVER going to produce a great sounding recording

just the way it is

edit: if price is the problem and you MUST keep recording on your onboard sound, do keep it at line in setting as the crap internal mic pre-amp will wreak havoc on your recording

also you could try cleaning it up with a noise filter but that's hit or miss unless you know exactly what you're doing

powered speakers sometimes cause feedback with computers. also check your windows audio settings, make sure the mic input is muted. just as kemp said even if its turned all the way down sometimes it picks up the internal fan... its really trial and error, ive delt with this problem many times. its fucking annoying.

If you have used all the same equipment and have haven't been messing with the setting Id be led to believe its your wiring and its shorting somewhere.

voins: i had this same problem for a long time

all you need to buy is this

http://www.electronicplus.com/images/products/419GY.jpg

its a plug that you plug a 3 prong cord into, and then on the other side only two prongs come out. it eliminates the ground prong from being plugged in, and then it wont matter if you have a short.

Yo, Get a ground block... The problem is your ground wire in your laptop is connected to the Turntables (their gound wire) and mixer and it is causing feed back that turns into noise. Put a ground block on the end of your laptop plug and it should go away. I had that happen at the cookie party while doing sound check. Ground block is that thing that makes a 3 prong to just the two prong plug. I highly recommend NOT leaving this plugged in all the time. Cause is you have a lighting storm zap a pole Your shitz will be fried! This will even happen if you use a surge protector, reason being is you took out the ground wire. I always unplug my equipment anyway. Learned the hard way a few years ago.

+2

I offer my services if you need to come out to Utica. You know my number.

before I got my M-audio Delta 44 sound card I had the same problem.

There is no way to record a professional sounding mix w/o a pro-grade soundcard.

Not privy to the better ones on the market for laptops, but I do know that m-audio makes competetively priced high end sound cards. Check them out. Mine was 200$
